Recap: Continuum 402 “Rush Hour”

The Matthew Kellog from the future tells Kellog that he needs to trust the Time Soldiers if he wants to fix the future. Future Kellog disappears and present Kellog gets a text message that says “we got her”.  In the next scene, Emily – bruised and beaten – crouches in a corner as a man takes her photo with his phone.

In Alec’s apartment, Alec’s phone goes off.  He’s received a photo of Emily from Kellog.  Alec calls Kellog and Kiera demands to know what he wants.  Kellog wants his “goodies” back in return for Emily.  He says he’ll be in touch and hangs up.  Kiera tells Alec that they have to give Kellog what he wants and Alec reveals that Kellog has the second time travel device and will have access to time travel.

Marcellus meets with Kellog at his office to give him a list of supplies and also tells him that he needs a work crew at a specific building.  Kellog says he’ll see what he can do and then asks if they’re going to “renovate” their way to a better future.  Marcellus tells him that if his future self didn’t tell him, then he can’t tell him.  He reminds Kellog that in his future the world is torn apart and that they can save millions of lives if they trust each other.

At the precinct, Kiera tells Carlos that she won’t let Kellog get away with anything and she needs him to put surveillance on Kellog and his people to find Emily.  Carlos agrees, but says he has to visit Kellog or he’ll get suspicious.

At Alec’s apartment, Julian, Lucas and Jason are busy working on a new way to hack into PIRON.  They tell Alec that PIRON’s system is clean.  Alec says he’ll do whatever he has to get Emily back.

Elsewhere, Kiera meets with Brad.  He tells her that he’s going to remain embedded and that Marcellus seems to be buying his story about using her for information.  Kiera says she’s telling Carlos the same thing.  Brad tells her that Marcellus is meeting with Kellog and Kiera reciprocates by telling that him that everyone is looking for Liber8, not the Time Soldiers.

At Kellogg’s office, Carlos questions Kellog about Emily’s disappearance.  Kellog is telling Carlos that he doesn’t know anything when they are interrupted by Dillon.  Carlos tells him he’s just keeping his seat warm for him at the precinct and Dillon tells him not to bother.

Back at the apartment, Kiera arrives to pick up the hard drive before she meets Kellog.  She takes a call from Carlos and he tells her that his surveillance is in place.  She tells him she’s on her way to meet Kellog and he reveals that Dillon is working for Kellog.  He tells her to be careful before hanging up.  Alec gives Kiera the hard drive and she leaves.

At Alec’s apartment, he reveals to Lucas that he can track the data usage of every PIRON phone which could lead him to the location that is being used to hold Emily.

Kiera meets with Kellog at a restaurant after giving Dillon the hard drive.  He tries to make small talk and she tells him to show her proof that Emily is still alive.

In another location, two thugs handcuff Emily to a chair and take another photo of her.  They leave and Emily discovers a broken piece of wire on the chair that she uses to try to pick the lock on her handcuffs.

Lucas calls Alec to let him know that he thinks he’s located the building that Emily is being held in.

Meanwhile, Travis and Jasmine sit in a car outside the restaurant discussing sacrificing Kiera to kill Kellog.   Unaware of them, Carlos takes photos from the bushes.

Inside the restaurant, Kellog shows Kiera the picture of Emily.  Kellog gets a text telling him that there is an encryption code buried in the data on the harddrive.  He tells Kiera that he wants clean data or Emily will pay the price.  Keira calls Alec’s apartment.  Lucas answers the phone and as she’s speaking to him the waiter leaves the restaurant, locking the door and triggering a device as he walks out.  At the same time, Carlos spots Travis and Jasmine and realizes that Kiera is in danger.

In an abandoned building, Alec approaches one of Emily’s guards and convinces him that he’s his other self.  Smoke billows from a candle as Kiera yells for Lucas to figure out the code that will unlock the restaurant door.  Lucas tells Kiera the smoke is poisonous and that Kellog already has it in his lungs, but she picks up Kellog to carry him out of the restaurant anyway. Dillon arrives as Kiera is carrying Kellog to the water.   Jasmine and Travis realize that Kellog is still alive, but before they can leave their car, Carlos rams into them in an SUV.  Kiera submerges Kellog in water and holds him down until he stops moving.  Lucas watches from a computer screen and yells “now!”  She drags Kellog from the water, yelling for Dillon to help her, and begins CPR.

Alec, disguised as his other self, approaches the door to where Emily’s being held captive with one of her guards, but the guard realizes he’s not who he claims to be and pulls his gun.  Emily runs from the room and helps Alec fight off the guard.

Carlos stumbles from his car and approaches the car with Travis and Jasmine in it.  Travis attacks Carlos, beats him to the ground and prepares to shoot him, but Dillon shoots Travis first and arrests him.

Kiera continues chest compressions on Kellog until he coughs up water.  She explains that she had to fill his lungs with water to counteract the chemicals he’d inhaled.  Lucas calls Kiera and tells her that Alec has rescued Emily.  Kiera tells Kellog that Emily has escaped and their deal is off.  Carlos informs Kiera that Garza escaped.

As Kiera drives away, Garza sits up from where she was hiding in the backseat of the car.  Kiera confronts her about trying to kill Kellog and herself.  Garza tells her that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Kiera arrives at Alec’s with Garza and tells her that Travis is in police custody. As everyone starts making dinner, Lucas and Julian ask Alec if he wants to trigger the code hidden in Kellog’s data.  Alec says he won’t do that and that they all need to start working together to stop Kellog.  As they all start to eat, Emily finishes her beer and wanders away from the table.

At Kellog’s apartment, Kellog asks Chen if he put Liber8 up to killing him.  Chen denies it and tells Kellog that he can’t accomplish anything on his own and that he will soon have the chance to send Kiera home.

Alec walks into Emily’s room to find her packing.  She says she has to leave to keep him safe.  She kisses him goodbye and walks away.

Recap: Continuum 401 “Lost Hours”

Kiera and Brad unleashed a “signal” which brought with it future soldiers armed to kill. While Brad re-joined the soldiers as their ally, others continued to pursue Kiera eventually blasting her off her feet. She woke up in the hospital in 2080 and had an emotional reunion with Sam, but all was not as it seemed. As several nefarious characters entered her room and her vision distorted before we came to in 2015. Alec and Carlos came to her aid, but Kiera was shaken. She explained the CMR in her suit produced a simulation in the event of head trauma but didn’t elaborate further. Back in dead Alec’s fancy house, Kiera told Alec she stopped Liber8 and stopped Alec from creating the ‘broken future.’ She felt she’d completed her mission and wanted to focus on herself now. The simulation reignited a sense of longing to get back to her son.  She wanted to go home and wanted Alec’s help to send her.

Alec revealed Kellogg’s new position at Piron to Kiera. But Alec had plans to mess with them. Kiera wondered if Alec had forgotten their previous conversation already, but Alec explained Kellogg has the technology that Kiera needs to get back home.

Curtis warned Kellogg his future would always catch up with him. Now that the foot soldiers had arrived, Curtis offered to help Kellogg decipher which decisions were important for Kellog’s future but Kellogg was still hesitant to accept the alliance.

Kiera and Carlos crashed Kellogg’s party and rattle his cage about Brad, the super soldiers and Kellog’s overlord future. Alec and his friends locked down the Piron servers, stealing and deleting the data. Kellog called Alec and asked if he was ready for DEFCON 1. Alec told him to bring it before hanging up on him. When Kiera confronted Alec about what he’d done to the Piron servers and provoking trouble with Kellog, Alec told her information they’d stolen from the servers contained the technical information they needed to send Keira back home.

Lucas and Garza discussed Kellogg controlling Piron and how it was bad for everyone. Lucas also revealed Kiera was protecting Brad, prompting Garza to take action. Worried about Brad, Kiera enlisted Alec’s help and went to the super solider location while Alec spoke in her ear, just like the old days. Garza followed Kiera with armed at the ready. She reluctantly agreed to give Kiera a head start before infiltrating the super soldier building guns blazing.

Alec recorded all Kiera was able to see amongst the super soldiers and their supplies. While invisible with her suit, Kiera attempted to take a pen-like device unnoticed but was shot at and exposed. Through a hail of gunfire she gave chase onto the roof before being shot again. Kiera woke up being held over the edge by the future soldiers while Brad looked on. Brad suggested to Marcellus that Kiera could be useful. Marcellus disagreed and threw her off the roof but Kiera used her suit to ignite a force field that shielded her, lessening the impact of her fall onto a car. Garza rolled up just in time for her to hop in the car and escape while Marcellus seemed increasingly doubtful of Brad’s loyalty.

After a kick ass fight, where she was SO close to getting away, Kellog’s men kidnapped Emily. Kiera went to see Carlos and admitted she’d been preoccupied with thoughts of Sam. She needed to believe that future still exists. Carlos supported Kiera’s desire to get home, even if he wasn’t happy about it. With a flask they toasted to getting her there.

At a late night meting, Curtis prompted Garza to kill Kellog for everyone’s benefit, while Kellog himself received a mystery envelope that contained a futuristic device. When Kellog activated he saw an older version of himself.

This week on Continuum 301, ‘Minute by Minute’

If you could travel to the past for a chance to save the future, would you risk leaving behind your life, your family, your future? Law enforcer Kiera Cameron wasn’t given a choice in the year 2077, when a conspiracy sent her over six decades back in time to track down a cell of temporal fugitives. In modern-day Vancouver, she’s doing her job and maintaining her cover while holding out hope that she can eventually get home — assuming the home she knew still exists. Keira has learned the hard way that the only time she can trust anyone is now, and it might not be a question of how her dystopian adventure ends so much as when, of if. If you have not yet watched the episode, you can do so here. Below, some highlights from the episode. [WARNING: SPOILERS, SPOILERS EVERYWHERE!]

Continuum S03E01-pic2
Kiera and Garza: “Would you PLEASE stop humming?” “I’m not humming.” “Well, I’M not humming… uh-oh.”

When is Alec Sadler?” It’s a question not easily answered, as Kiera, imprisoned by the freelancers/privateers at the end of Continuum Season 2, undergoes interrogation. She knows no more than do her captors: Alec has gone back in time to try to prevent his girlfriend’s execution, without realizing that removing himself from the main timeline will impact future-history’s progress. The freelancers, it is revealed, are time-travelling non-cops, self-appointed and self-described “guardians” working to prevent criminal abuse of the timestream. Head freelancer Catherine asks Kiera to join the group; Kiera refuses, telling them that they are no better than Liber8 or anyone who would manipulate the order of things. A chance stairwell encounter with an under-transportation Liber8 captive results in both Kiera and her frenemy Garza killing their guards and escaping together into the prison complex’s steam tunnels. It’s a short-lived escape (literally for Garza, who is killed). Kiera reluctantly agrees to work with freelancers when it becomes apparent that the current timeline is self-destructing; because she never belonged in the past — any past — she can escape, using freelancer technology, to follow Alec.

Alec and Emily: Like the saying goes, execution and one-week time displacement make the heart grow fonder.

Unbeknownst to anyone but himself, Alec has indeed gone back in time: by exactly one week. He immediately locates Emily, Kellog and Jason (letting the latter in on his true from-one-week-in-the-future identity), and wastes no time stirring up anti-Escher paranoia. His argument is sound even if he’s using it as a distraction: Where Liber8 is quasi-religious, not entirely dissimilar to the freelancers, Escher is an opportunist/capitalist who wants to preserve the future as-was, for one reason only: because it’s in his best interests. The fact that Escher is Alec’s father and Jason is Alec’s son — both of them (in fact, all three of them) time-displaced — does not influence Alec’s agenda. He visits the Kiera of the one-week-ago timeline and sets her on a path to discover the time-disruptor ARC device that launched his trip. One factor he does not anticipate (and of which he is not yet aware) is Emily’s rebellious assassination of her blackmailer, Escher.

Kiera and Garza: The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

With Kiera’s arrival, the alternate, week-old timeline becomes the only timeline. On a whim, she sets Garza free from her cell; whether this act will help her or prove to be something she regrets later, only time will tell. Once again recaptured by the freelancers, this time voluntarily, Kiera explains her new mission, and offers “proof”: Catherine from the now-dead timeline had given Kiera the official freelancer tattoo. Two Alecs cannot, should not viably exist; one will have to be permanently removed, which is to say killed. How will Kiera determine which Alec is the “right” Alec to save? Even she does not know, but understands she has the best chance of making the correct decision. By extension, two Kieras also cannot exist. The episode ends with a mind-blowing twist, as Alec discovers Kiera, murdered, only to turn around and see…Kiera.
