Recap: Continuum 404 “Zero Hour”

Alec sits as the dining room table remembering the last dinner everyone had together.  Jason interrupts him to tell him that he’s not meant to be with Emily, that Emily isn’t Jason’s mother.  Alec accuses him of driving Emily away and storms from the room.

Kiera dumps Lucas’s ashes into a stream in the park as Alec watches.  Brad appears and walks towards them.  Kiera hits him the chest and yells that he killed Lucas.  He tells her that Lucas was only there because of her and if he’d been captured he would have been tortured and confessed to everything.  Brad’s cover would have been blown and they’d never accomplish what they’ve been working for.  Kiera demands to know what the Time Soldiers are building.  Brad says he doesn’t know, but that it uses the same technology as the power suits.  He asks for the key and Kiera tells him she doesn’t have it.  He tells her Zorin will never trust him unless he returns it.  He gives her a cell phone to call him when she has the key.

Kiera walks up to Carlos outside the precinct as he’s discussing a theft with an officer.  She asks what was stolen and he tells her it was a quantum computer – probably stolen by the Time Soldiers.  He confronts her about trusting Brad again.  She assures him that she wants this resolved as much as he does.  He says that they’ll need Alec to figure out what the Time Soldiers need the quantum computer for.

Inside the precinct, Jason approaches Alec.  Alec apologizes for snapping at him earlier and tells him that to have a healthy relationship they have to be honest with each other.  He asks Jason who his mother is if Emily is not a part of Alec’s future.  Jason doesn’t want to tell him, but Alec tells him to go find her.

Kellog and Vasquez walk out of PIRON.  He complains to her about not knowing what’s going on.  She tells him that Marcellus told him everything he needs to know.  He tries to convince her to give him more information, but she grabs him by the throat and tells him that his future self had warned her that he would try to seduce her, because unobtainable women are his Achilles’ heel.

At the precinct, Carlos tells Kiera about a robbery at the blood bank, presumably the work of the Time Soldiers.  She says that they only need blood if they plan on spilling it.  Alec interrupts them to show them security footage of Brad helping during the robbery.  Alec tells Kiera to prove that Brad is on their side within 24 hours or he’ll assign the case to someone else.

Later, Alec shows Kiera a computer simulation of the device that the Time Soldiers are building.  As the simulation runs he realizes that the device is a weapon and tells Kiera that if they’ve stolen any radioactive isotopes the weapon could kills hundreds of thousands. As she rushes from the precinct her phone rings.  It’s Brad and he tells her to meet him at their favourite park.

At the factory, Kellog questions Zorin about what they’re building.  He tells him that it’s up to Marcellus to tell him that, but also offers to introduce him to the rest of the team.

In Alec’s office, Jason looks at the simulation and asks Alec if it’s a fusion bomb.  Alec says he’s not sure, because it’s missing a key piece.  Jason blurts out that he has “the key”, but what he means is that he’s found his mother.

Brad walks up to Kiera in the park.  She confronts Brad about the Time Soliders building a bomb.  He refuses to believe that, but says if it is a bomb he’ll stop them.  He gives her the address of a storage locker where he believes something important is being held.  They are both unaware that Chen is hiding nearby, watching them as they talk.

Carlos and Kiera approach the door of the storage locker.  Carlos unlocks it to reveal something covered by a plastic tarp.  It’s a dialysis machine.

Jason and Alec are across the street from a café, watching a pretty young lady wait on a table.  Jason tells him he found her on Instagram.  He tries to get Alec to leave, but Alec says he’s hungry and walks towards the café.

Carlos confronts Kellog under an overpass.  He tells Kellog that they found something a storage locker rented by a subsidiary of PIRON that is linked to a terrorist cell.  Kellog scoffs that he can’t tie him directly to the terrorists and suggests that he should be talking to Kiera as he walks back to his car.  In the car, Vasquez tell Kellog that Marcellus wants more security.  He tells her that he’s tired of taking orders and he won’t give the Soldiers anything else until he has full disclosure of their plans.

Alec and Jason sit at the counter in the café, arguing about whether to leave.  Jason tells Alec that he doesn’t know much as his mother, because she got sick and died when he was young.  The waitress approaches them to take their order and is concerned by Jason’s odd behavior.  He jumps and leaves the café, but Alec stays and orders pie.

In a gazebo in the park Alec looks at a phone number and the name “Annie” written on a receipt.  Kiera approaches and asks him what’s going on.  He watches a young couple and says they don’t know what their future holds, that they’re not like him and her.  He’s afraid that he’ll make the future worse.  She assures him that she has faith in him and he asks if that’s why she asked to meet him there.  She looks startled and pulls out her gun as she tells him that she got a message saying he wanted to meet her.  She turns around to see Chen approaching.

Kiera demands to know what Chen wants and tells him that his loyalties are suspect.  He says he knows his purpose now and that the Traveler can help them make things right.  He explains that the Traveler came from the distant future and was sent back in time to observe history.  Somewhere in history he accidentally changed something that changed the future.  The Traveler has hope now, because Kiera, Alec and Brad and the machine the Time Soldiers are building can fix things.  Alec doesn’t believe him and walks away angrily, but before he can leave the park a man in a cloak touches him on the forehead and sends him to the future to confront his future self.

Alec’s future self is an old man.  Alec tells him that the Traveler wanted them to meet.  His older self hasn’t yet invented time travel and he says that he’s beginning to think it’s not a good idea.  He tells Alec that the universe is shifting and changing.  Alec replies that it’s because he met Annie.  He asks the older man how long he was with Annie before she got sick.  His future self replies that she wasn’t sick, she killed herself when she realized what he was doing.  He tells Alec that he can change this, but he doesn’t know how.  Alec realizes that time travel isn’t an experiment, but a solution.  Suddenly, Alec is laying on the grass in the park and Kiera is asking him if he’s okay.

Dillon slaps a file on Kellog’s desk and tells him it’s the VPD case files on all the robberies that are being linked to the new cell of terrorists.  He tells Kellog not to ask him to steal files from the police again.  Kellog tells him the VPD wouldn’t have taken care of him the way Kellog did and asks him to let go of the past.  Vasquez listens from the other room.

Alec and Kiera walk out of the park as Kiera tells him that Chen said that a moment is coming where everything can be repaired.  Alec tells her he’s not afraid anymore and that they need to trust themselves and each other.

At the precinct, Alec is hurrying to his office when Carlos stops him.  He confronts Alec about keeping him in the dark and asks him to tell him where Kiera is.  He’s tired of playing games.

Vasquez and Kellog stand in Kellog’s apartment.  He asks her why she’s risking her life for his future self.  She admits that his future self is dying of kidney failure and he realizes that he needs a kidney transplant.  She walks away and Kellog looks down at a picture of the dialysis machine that Kiera and Carlos found in the storage locker.

Jason walks up to Alec’s desk at the precinct.  He tells Alec that something wasn’t right with his simulations so created new ones.  As they wait for the new simulation to load, Jason asks about what happened in the café after he left.  Alec tells him that Annie isn’t his type and that he needs to break old patterns by creating new ones.   His laptop begins to beep as the simulation is completed.  He is overjoyed to realize that the machine the Time Soldiers are building isn’t a bomb.

Kiera is driving when she receives a call from Kellog.  She asks what he wants and he replies that she was right.  He can’t trust himself and they need to work together.  He says that Marcellus and Brad are up to something bad.  He begs her to trust him, because he has the only way to send her home.

In the factory, Zorin finds out that the VPD raided their storage locker and found the dialysis machine.  Brad’s phone goes off with an alert that Kiera is near the building.  One of the soldiers offers to “take care of it”, but Brad pulls his gun.  Zorin tells the soldier to stand down and then reveals to Brad that the Soldiers are building a portal so that their people from the future can come there.  Brad’s sister and nephews are waiting to come through the portal and if Brad doesn’t cooperate they will die.  Brad tells Zorin to let him handle Kiera.

In an alley outside the factory, Brad confronts Kiera.  She tosses him the cell phone with the tracker and accuses him of playing her.  He tries to convince her that she needs to walk away, but she tells him that she can’t.  Carlos appears and points his gun at Brad.  He tells Kiera that Brad was planning to kill her and Kiera replies that it’s not that simple.  Brad tells Kiera to get Carlos out of there or he’ll end up dead.  She steps in front of Brad and tells Carlos that she’s sorry.  She wants to go home so badly that she lied to him.  Brad walks away.

Back at the precinct, Alex apologizes to Kiera for telling Carlos where she went.  She tells him that it’s time to tell Carlos the truth.  Alec tells them both that he and Jason have discovered that the device the Time Soldiers are building is a portal from the future.  Kiera realizes that the supplies that the Soldiers have been stealing are to supply an army.  She says that they have to stop them, but Alec replies that the portal works both ways – he can use it to send Kiera back home.

Recap: Continuum 403 “Power Hour”

Travis watches Carlos from his prison cell as Carlos tells him that Liber8 has failed.  Kiera walks into the room and tries to convince Carlos to release Travis into her custody.  She tells him that she needs soldiers of her own and she wants to do things that the police can’t do.  Carlos refuses and leaves the room.

Marcellus, Zorin and Brad walk through a factory as Zorin tells Marcellus that they need the key that Kiera stole from them to complete their mission.  Zorin questions Brad’s loyalty and Marcellus tells him that if Brad weren’t loyal they’d be drowning in blood by now.

Vasquez approaches Kellog on the street and beats up his security men.   He offers her money and she introduces herself as his new bodyguard.

At Alec’s apartment Julian taunts Alec about losing PIRON to Kellog and bemoans his future fate as a bad guy.  Lucas tells Julian that he needs to man up and be the author of his own destiny and in response Julia throws his manifesto in the fire.

At the precinct, Kellog arrives with Dillon and Vasquez.  They meet with Carlos in his office to discuss Emily’s kidnapping.  Kellog tries to leave when Carlos says he’s not under arrest, but Kiera tells him they’ll lock him up with Travis if he doesn’t sit down.  Kellog threatens to release incriminating information on Alec and Kiera if they don’t stop harassing him.  As he leaves the office, Dillon asks Carlos what he thought he was going to achieve and Carlos questions Dillon’s integrity.

Alec arrives at the precinct to talk to Carlos and Kiera.  He tells them he wants to help at the police department by taking over Betty’s position.  As they talk Carlos gets a phone call about a robbery of superconducting magnets from a university lab.  Carlos believes it was the Time Soldiers who stole the magnets and Alec says he can help check the university’s surveillance.

At the apartment, Lucas discovers that someone is offering Theseus’ Manifesto online for free.  He shows Julian and Julian angrily tells him to find out who’s behind it.

Alec looks at traffic camera footage at his desk as Kiera watches.  He finds footage of Brad driving the getaway van in the robbery.  Kiera leaves to try to track Brad after telling Alec not to tell Carlos where she went.  After she’s gone, Carlos enters the office to ask Alec where she’s going.  When Alec claims he doesn’t know, Carlos asks him to track her CMR and update him on her movements.  Alec says he’ll watch out for her but Carlos needs to trust his discretion.

At his desk, Alec is examining the key that Kiera stole from the Time Soldiers when his phone rings.  It’s Kiera and he tells her that the key is magnetic and lines up with a large magnetic field coming from an abandoned factory owned by PIRON.  The factory is close to the van’s last known location.  Kiera tells him to sneak out of the precinct and come meet her at his place.

Julian gets out of a cab in front of a suburban house.  He introduces himself to the woman who answers the doors as Theseus.  She invites him in and when he asks her why she published his manifesto Chen walks into the room and says “because I told her to”.

At Alec’s, Lucas, Kiera and Garza are looking at a surveillance feed of the factory.  Lucas says that trucks have been arriving all day.  Kiera tells Garza that they need to get into the factory to see what’s going on in there.  Lucas will from outside and Alec can monitor everything from his apartment.

At the house, Chen tells Julian that he admires Theseus, just like their host, Mrs. Kagame.  Julian realizes that her son is Edouard Kagame.  Chen tells Julian that in 20 years he will organize a rebellion against corporate power that will get hundreds of thousands killed.  Julian says he refuses to allow his manifesto to influence young Edouard.  Chen replies that he has control over his life and can ensure that his teachings are never used wrongly by fanatics.  Julian leaves, but as he walks away Chen tells him that the world needs him.

Lucas and Kiera sit in a van outside the factory with Garza.  Garza and Kiera are both wearing CMR suits.  They turn invisible, but once they enter the factory their suits are jammed by an anti-cloaking device.  They decide to continue anyway.  As they go deeper into the factory they discover that the Time Soldiers are building something that is giving off huge amounts of energy.  They agree that it must be destroyed.

In another room in the factory, Garza and Kiera discover a stash of weapons and explosives.  Garza starts building a bomb while Kiera monitors what’s going in the rest of the factory.  Back at Alec’s apartment he suddenly realizes that the soldiers are building a high powered anti-matter system that could take Kiera home.  He tells Kiera not to blow it up, but Garza accuses Kiera of stalling because Brad is in the factory.  While they argue a Time Soldier enters the room and attacks them.  They knock him out, but Garza refuses to leave.  She’s heading for the bomb when her suit flashes and she drops to the floor.  Alec triggered a failsafe device that he’d installed in the suit.  Kiera picks up Garza and leaves.  Alec tells Lucas to get closer to the factory in the van.

Zorin, Marcellus and Brad discover the unconscious guard and revive him.  He tells them he was attacked by two people with cloaking tech.  Marcellus and Brad leave to find them.

Garza wakes up just in time for her and Kiera to run into some Time Soldiers who open fire on them.  Alec tells Lucas that he needs to go inside to help, but he’s being held at gunpoint by a soldier.  Lucas punches the soldier out, takes his gun and runs for the factory.

Garza attacks the Time Soldiers and overpowers them.  She and Kiera make a run for it, but Marcellus catches up to them and knocks Garza out.  He grabs Kiera and just as he’s about to stab her, Brad yells “no”.  Lucas appears and opens fire on Marcellus.  Brad returns fire on Lucas and kills him.  Kiera helps Garza up and they leave the factory while Brad stares at the bodies of Marcellus and Lucas.

In the van Garza tells Kiera that her fault that Lucas is dead, that Lucas died to protect a future that only she wants.  She forces Kiera to pull over and gets out of the van.

Back at the factory, Zorin tells the soldiers that they need to work double-time to finish their mission.  One of the soldiers reminds Zorin that Brad is the ranking officer.  They argue amongst themselves until Brad tells them that Marcellus would want Zorin in charge.

Alec returns to the precinct and Kiera tells him that it’s not his fault that Lucas was killed.  Carlos approaches to ask Alec if he has a lead on the van.  Alec says he needed to get some extra components for his computer system.  Carlos leaves and Alec confronts Kiera about protecting Brad.  Kiera tells him that they need to protect the factory until they know what’s going on and that means Carlos can’t know anything about it.

Kiera speaks to Travis in his cell.  She tells him that Lucas was killed saving her life.  He tells her not to blame herself, because Lucas was willing to give his life for the cause.  She admits that it’s getting harder make the right decisions, but says she will do what she has to do to make sure Kellog is stopped.  From his office Carlos listens in on their conversation from a security camera.

Julian returns to Alec’s apartment and tells Alec that he thinks he needs to leave.  Alec stops him by saying that he’s read his manifesto and that it’s beautiful.  He reminds Julian that he changed his own future and that Julian can as well.

Kellog relaxes in a hot tub on the balcony of his apartment and encourages Vasquez to relax.  He sends her to get a glass of wine and after she leaves Kiera steps onto the balcony.  She tells him that the Time Soldiers killed Lucas.  Vasquez returns and when she pulls her gun Kellog tells her that Kiera was just leaving.  Before she walks away she asks him a question – if no one else can trust you, then how can you trust you?

Mrs. Kagame stands on her porch holding her son as Julia approaches.  He’s carrying his bags and she lets him into the house.

Recap: Continuum 402 “Rush Hour”

The Matthew Kellog from the future tells Kellog that he needs to trust the Time Soldiers if he wants to fix the future. Future Kellog disappears and present Kellog gets a text message that says “we got her”.  In the next scene, Emily – bruised and beaten – crouches in a corner as a man takes her photo with his phone.

In Alec’s apartment, Alec’s phone goes off.  He’s received a photo of Emily from Kellog.  Alec calls Kellog and Kiera demands to know what he wants.  Kellog wants his “goodies” back in return for Emily.  He says he’ll be in touch and hangs up.  Kiera tells Alec that they have to give Kellog what he wants and Alec reveals that Kellog has the second time travel device and will have access to time travel.

Marcellus meets with Kellog at his office to give him a list of supplies and also tells him that he needs a work crew at a specific building.  Kellog says he’ll see what he can do and then asks if they’re going to “renovate” their way to a better future.  Marcellus tells him that if his future self didn’t tell him, then he can’t tell him.  He reminds Kellog that in his future the world is torn apart and that they can save millions of lives if they trust each other.

At the precinct, Kiera tells Carlos that she won’t let Kellog get away with anything and she needs him to put surveillance on Kellog and his people to find Emily.  Carlos agrees, but says he has to visit Kellog or he’ll get suspicious.

At Alec’s apartment, Julian, Lucas and Jason are busy working on a new way to hack into PIRON.  They tell Alec that PIRON’s system is clean.  Alec says he’ll do whatever he has to get Emily back.

Elsewhere, Kiera meets with Brad.  He tells her that he’s going to remain embedded and that Marcellus seems to be buying his story about using her for information.  Kiera says she’s telling Carlos the same thing.  Brad tells her that Marcellus is meeting with Kellog and Kiera reciprocates by telling that him that everyone is looking for Liber8, not the Time Soldiers.

At Kellogg’s office, Carlos questions Kellog about Emily’s disappearance.  Kellog is telling Carlos that he doesn’t know anything when they are interrupted by Dillon.  Carlos tells him he’s just keeping his seat warm for him at the precinct and Dillon tells him not to bother.

Back at the apartment, Kiera arrives to pick up the hard drive before she meets Kellog.  She takes a call from Carlos and he tells her that his surveillance is in place.  She tells him she’s on her way to meet Kellog and he reveals that Dillon is working for Kellog.  He tells her to be careful before hanging up.  Alec gives Kiera the hard drive and she leaves.

At Alec’s apartment, he reveals to Lucas that he can track the data usage of every PIRON phone which could lead him to the location that is being used to hold Emily.

Kiera meets with Kellog at a restaurant after giving Dillon the hard drive.  He tries to make small talk and she tells him to show her proof that Emily is still alive.

In another location, two thugs handcuff Emily to a chair and take another photo of her.  They leave and Emily discovers a broken piece of wire on the chair that she uses to try to pick the lock on her handcuffs.

Lucas calls Alec to let him know that he thinks he’s located the building that Emily is being held in.

Meanwhile, Travis and Jasmine sit in a car outside the restaurant discussing sacrificing Kiera to kill Kellog.   Unaware of them, Carlos takes photos from the bushes.

Inside the restaurant, Kellog shows Kiera the picture of Emily.  Kellog gets a text telling him that there is an encryption code buried in the data on the harddrive.  He tells Kiera that he wants clean data or Emily will pay the price.  Keira calls Alec’s apartment.  Lucas answers the phone and as she’s speaking to him the waiter leaves the restaurant, locking the door and triggering a device as he walks out.  At the same time, Carlos spots Travis and Jasmine and realizes that Kiera is in danger.

In an abandoned building, Alec approaches one of Emily’s guards and convinces him that he’s his other self.  Smoke billows from a candle as Kiera yells for Lucas to figure out the code that will unlock the restaurant door.  Lucas tells Kiera the smoke is poisonous and that Kellog already has it in his lungs, but she picks up Kellog to carry him out of the restaurant anyway. Dillon arrives as Kiera is carrying Kellog to the water.   Jasmine and Travis realize that Kellog is still alive, but before they can leave their car, Carlos rams into them in an SUV.  Kiera submerges Kellog in water and holds him down until he stops moving.  Lucas watches from a computer screen and yells “now!”  She drags Kellog from the water, yelling for Dillon to help her, and begins CPR.

Alec, disguised as his other self, approaches the door to where Emily’s being held captive with one of her guards, but the guard realizes he’s not who he claims to be and pulls his gun.  Emily runs from the room and helps Alec fight off the guard.

Carlos stumbles from his car and approaches the car with Travis and Jasmine in it.  Travis attacks Carlos, beats him to the ground and prepares to shoot him, but Dillon shoots Travis first and arrests him.

Kiera continues chest compressions on Kellog until he coughs up water.  She explains that she had to fill his lungs with water to counteract the chemicals he’d inhaled.  Lucas calls Kiera and tells her that Alec has rescued Emily.  Kiera tells Kellog that Emily has escaped and their deal is off.  Carlos informs Kiera that Garza escaped.

As Kiera drives away, Garza sits up from where she was hiding in the backseat of the car.  Kiera confronts her about trying to kill Kellog and herself.  Garza tells her that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Kiera arrives at Alec’s with Garza and tells her that Travis is in police custody. As everyone starts making dinner, Lucas and Julian ask Alec if he wants to trigger the code hidden in Kellog’s data.  Alec says he won’t do that and that they all need to start working together to stop Kellog.  As they all start to eat, Emily finishes her beer and wanders away from the table.

At Kellog’s apartment, Kellog asks Chen if he put Liber8 up to killing him.  Chen denies it and tells Kellog that he can’t accomplish anything on his own and that he will soon have the chance to send Kiera home.

Alec walks into Emily’s room to find her packing.  She says she has to leave to keep him safe.  She kisses him goodbye and walks away.

Recap: Continuum 401 “Lost Hours”

Kiera and Brad unleashed a “signal” which brought with it future soldiers armed to kill. While Brad re-joined the soldiers as their ally, others continued to pursue Kiera eventually blasting her off her feet. She woke up in the hospital in 2080 and had an emotional reunion with Sam, but all was not as it seemed. As several nefarious characters entered her room and her vision distorted before we came to in 2015. Alec and Carlos came to her aid, but Kiera was shaken. She explained the CMR in her suit produced a simulation in the event of head trauma but didn’t elaborate further. Back in dead Alec’s fancy house, Kiera told Alec she stopped Liber8 and stopped Alec from creating the ‘broken future.’ She felt she’d completed her mission and wanted to focus on herself now. The simulation reignited a sense of longing to get back to her son.  She wanted to go home and wanted Alec’s help to send her.

Alec revealed Kellogg’s new position at Piron to Kiera. But Alec had plans to mess with them. Kiera wondered if Alec had forgotten their previous conversation already, but Alec explained Kellogg has the technology that Kiera needs to get back home.

Curtis warned Kellogg his future would always catch up with him. Now that the foot soldiers had arrived, Curtis offered to help Kellogg decipher which decisions were important for Kellog’s future but Kellogg was still hesitant to accept the alliance.

Kiera and Carlos crashed Kellogg’s party and rattle his cage about Brad, the super soldiers and Kellog’s overlord future. Alec and his friends locked down the Piron servers, stealing and deleting the data. Kellog called Alec and asked if he was ready for DEFCON 1. Alec told him to bring it before hanging up on him. When Kiera confronted Alec about what he’d done to the Piron servers and provoking trouble with Kellog, Alec told her information they’d stolen from the servers contained the technical information they needed to send Keira back home.

Lucas and Garza discussed Kellogg controlling Piron and how it was bad for everyone. Lucas also revealed Kiera was protecting Brad, prompting Garza to take action. Worried about Brad, Kiera enlisted Alec’s help and went to the super solider location while Alec spoke in her ear, just like the old days. Garza followed Kiera with armed at the ready. She reluctantly agreed to give Kiera a head start before infiltrating the super soldier building guns blazing.

Alec recorded all Kiera was able to see amongst the super soldiers and their supplies. While invisible with her suit, Kiera attempted to take a pen-like device unnoticed but was shot at and exposed. Through a hail of gunfire she gave chase onto the roof before being shot again. Kiera woke up being held over the edge by the future soldiers while Brad looked on. Brad suggested to Marcellus that Kiera could be useful. Marcellus disagreed and threw her off the roof but Kiera used her suit to ignite a force field that shielded her, lessening the impact of her fall onto a car. Garza rolled up just in time for her to hop in the car and escape while Marcellus seemed increasingly doubtful of Brad’s loyalty.

After a kick ass fight, where she was SO close to getting away, Kellog’s men kidnapped Emily. Kiera went to see Carlos and admitted she’d been preoccupied with thoughts of Sam. She needed to believe that future still exists. Carlos supported Kiera’s desire to get home, even if he wasn’t happy about it. With a flask they toasted to getting her there.

At a late night meting, Curtis prompted Garza to kill Kellog for everyone’s benefit, while Kellog himself received a mystery envelope that contained a futuristic device. When Kellog activated he saw an older version of himself.

Armed with the knowledge that any/all time travel machinations have led to an impossible-to-fully-correct, let alone predict, change in future history, the ragtag dissidents of the Continuum universe headed into the season 3 finale with one new, perhaps final, mission in mind: destroy Young Alec’s evil empire. By dissidents, I mean just about everyone except for Young Alec — obviously Old Alec, along with Kiera, Brad (Kiera’s “killer”) and every surviving member of Liber8. On the eve of Young Alec’s launch of the HALO device that will essentially lead to full control of the world population, our heroes attempt a daring assault on Piron that not only exposes Young Alec’s hypocrisy in front of millions of people streaming the HALO press conference, but also ensures the permanent destruction of the time travel device. By the time the dust has settled, whatever “now” Kiera and co. are living in is the only now, and there will never be a chance to go back to 2077.Continuum S03E13-pic3“Old” Alec had a smashing time in “Young” Alec’s Piron time-travel lab

A lot of heartbreaking dialogue in this particular episode, especially between Alec(s) and Kiera. Having his evil version tell her, “I created your future. You’ll never get back to your family” shows just how far off the deep end he’s gone. All the sadder, then, Kiera’s powerful comeback: “I’m counting on it.” Discussing their mutual situation in the wee hours before the coordinated assault on Piron, Kiera and Brad agree that while they both ache to see their families again, they feel that they belong in 2014/now. Later, as Alec is about to confront Alec in a battle that must lead to a death, Old Alec — good Alec — tells Kiera that he always knew she would come back to rescue him from the Freelancers. Again, her response is moving: “I chose you because I knew you would build a better future than mine.” It’s nothing short of tragic to see Kiera resign herself to forever losing her family in order to do her job and save the world. And of course it’s completely in-character.

The revelation of the role of the device that the Freelancers seized from Brad is a mind-boggler: It’s a beacon back to his “old” future, to be activated once the timeline is safe — which is to say, prevented. As his commanding officer describes the device, “Our Hail Mary now has a Hail Mary”; it’s a backup for the backup. In the final minutes of the finale, when the dust has settled, Brad and Kiera activate the beacon, crossing their fingers that the best-case scenario occurs, which is to say that they hope nothing happens. At first, it seems to have worked. But a citywide power outage, a lightning ball in the middle of the park, and a cadre of futuristic-looking paramilitary types standing before the couple leaves them only one choice. “Run,” Brad shouts. Cut to Curtis and the time traveller, whose identity is still not known, and whom we’d overlooked in all the excitement. This was an ending but, typical of twisty, turny Continuum, it was also a fresh beginning.Continuum S03E13-pic5If you’re ever messing around with time travel and people show up dressed like this, feel free to assume that all has not gone according to plan
